Storage Calculator

The Storage Calculator is an interactive application designed to help you determine the amount of hard drive space you will require to record video data based on the selected number of days required for storage.

Calculation Method

The screen size that is configured in the Motion Setup affects the size of the video recording. The average image size for the 320x240 screen size is 3 KB. For 640x480 screen size, the average image size is 7KB . These numbers are based on the technology that i 3 DVR uses to make a digital video recordings: Motion JPEG technology.

Calculating the size of the video recording per hour.
The general formula for calculating video recording size:

(total fps number * size of one snapshot * 60 seconds * 60 minutes) / 10 6 = GB/H

Example:
How long can a customer record continuously with the 12008 DVMS system on a 200GB hard drive with the screen size 640x480? And with the screen size 320x240?

Note: To calculate the maximum length of video recording that will fit on the available hard drive, subtract 30 GB from the total hard drive space and divide this number by GB/hr number.
Solution:
200 GB - 30 GB = 170GB (total available space for video recording)
 Screen size = 640x480
 (120fps * 7 KB * 60s * 60 min)/10 6 = 3.02 GB/Hr
170GB / 3.02 GB/Hr = 56.3 hours (total length of continuous recording)

 Screen size = 320x240

(120 fps * 3 KB * 60s * 60 min)/10 6 = 1.3 GB/Hr
170GB / 1.3 GB/Hr = 130.7 hours (total length of continuous recording)

Therefore, the smaller screen size allows for longer recordings . In this case, more than double the length of the recording.

Note: this formula applies to the continuous recording only. Never underestimate the size of the recording. In the long run, the client would only be pleased to find out that in fact they can record for a longer period of time than originally promised. For instance, if the client uses Motion and/or Sensor recording as opposed to Continuous recording, ultimately they will be able to record for a longer time period.

Also note: The Screen Size is basically the picture resolution. The greater the resolution, the better the picture, the more detailed it is. Although the lower Screen Size (lower resolution) will decrease the size of the recording, it will also decrease its quality.
